The Canal Houses

Tackling Amsterdam’s housing crisis. Using prefabricated CLT units to mitigate the environmental impacts of housing densification.

With an ever growing population and an extremely limited amount of available land, the city of Amsterdam is struggling to find a way to manage its need for a denser and yet more affordable housing solution. With that in mind, and taking into consideration the heavy environmental impact projects like this carry, I proposed the Canal Houses as a new basic system to re-frame the way we approach housing developments.

By using mass timber combined with a modular approach and modern methods of prefabrication and construction, the Canal Houses are light weight – compact – easily assembled – expandable – upgradeable – relocatable – adaptable – resilient and recyclable. Presenting itself as a possible master key to unlock an universal solution to the housing crisis.
